When Waipara’s original vineyard was planted in 1981 by farmer, John McCaskey on his ‘Weka Plains’ property, it heralded the start of a whole new industry in Waipara.
By 1986 he had converted a haybarn near the Waipara township to become the area’s first winery and joint processing venture. A Winegarden Restaurant was established in 1992 which is soon to re-locate to the parklike surroundings of the ‘House o’ Hill” property at the end of Mackenzies Road with extra attractions including a 9-hole golf course.
All grapes are estate grown from 20 year old wines. Varieties grown and included in the blends are Pinot Gris, Briedecker, Merlot, Malbec, and Siebel, some of which will soon be expanded.
