Christchurch South Island WineGreat Wine Capitals
JANUARY 2011

It's hard to believe Christchurch and its surrounding South Island wine regions have been part of the Great Wine Capital Global Network for over a year!

It's been quite a challenge bringing the five regions of Marlborough, Nelson, Waipara Valley, Canterbury and Central Otago together under one membership. The Christchurch City Council and its local tourism and business partners are grateful for the support from the South Island's wine industry to achieve this.

Enjoy the news items below and we'll be in touch shortly with future plans for theChristchurch | South Island Great Wine Capital.

Christchurch | South Island Wine & Food Festival

The annual Christchurch | South Island Wine & Food Festival will be held at the start of each summer in Hagley Park, Christchurch, with the inaugural event on Saturday 3 December 2011.

The event will be a celebration of premium South Island wines and a key way to continue the momentum of our membership to the GWC network.

Wine Discovery New Zealand 2010

Earthquakes aside, the Wine Discovery conference was a fantastic week to celebrate the South Islands' premium wine and was attended by international delegates, media and speakers.

The event ran from Sunday 31 October to Thursday 4 November 2010 and included wine tours out to the regions, an international wine tasting evening, a gala dinner and two impressive wine symposia.

A huge thanks to the Minister of Economic Development Gerry Brownlee and to Major Events Funding for their support, particularly in light of the earthquake on September 4.

Thanks also to the participating wineries, sponsors, partners and attendants who made the event such a success.

On a final note, here is some feedback from Margaret Rand, Decanter UK, one of the participating media who had been brought out for the conference:

"I've just got back, and I'm not quite sure yet what day it is, but I do know that I had a great time in NZ. Thank you so much: the organisation was excellent, and the conference was interesting and useful. I was delighted to be there."
